Chicago Tribune spotlights Stan Ruby in coverage of anti-ABM press conference
The campaign against anti-ballistic missiles in which Stan Ruby was leading participant had been underway for more than a year when this press conference was held to focus attention on the upcoming Senate vote to authorize Safeguard, a new ABM system.
The press conference represented a coalition of anti-ABM and anti-Vietnam war organizations backing a upcoming rally at Chicago's Orchestra Hall featuring speeches by Sen. Albert Gore and Rep. Sidney Yates.
Stan is in focus in the Tribune photo and is featured as the principle spokesperson in the article.
What happened to the Senate authorization for the weapons system? It passed by one vote when Sen. Margaret Chase Smith switched her vote at the last minute. However, the deployment of the system was very limited and the program was cancelled in 1976, portrayed by the New York Times as a vindication for the original critics in 1968 and '69.
