Isetta's mother Harriet Smith descended from the Mayflower family of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley
When I showed my Stetson results to Twyla, she was interested to learn that Cornet Robert Stetson arrived in Plymouth Colony shortly after the Mayflower. But what about the family members who were actually aboard the original Pilgrim ship?
Those would be the famous couple of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, whose history and genealogy are well documented. How did the Stetson family intersect with this famous Mayflower family?
It turns out Twyla had quite a bit of information. She knew there was a line of three daughters named Hope. In fact, she thought the line of descent was mostly or entirely through daughter relationships.
She also knew the Stetson family connection to the Howland line came through Isetta's mother, Harriett Smith. When I mentioned that Harriett's mother was Martha Haskell, she recognized that the Haskell surname was part of the lineage.
With those clues, I went to work mapping the generations back from Martha Haskell and forward from John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. I knew I was on the right track when I found that Martha's father, Captain George Henry Haskell, though living in western New York state and later in northeastern Ohio, was a native of Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The full results are below. Twyla was right about the Hopes and the predominantly female line of descent. There were two male generations but none since 1840, when Captain Haskell died in North Bloomfield, Ohio.
Both families went back to the Plymouth Colony but it took them nine generations to get together in the American midwest.
