When born in Berlin in 1936, author Sue Key was already classified as “Mischling in the first degree.” The Nazi Nuremberg Laws had been enacted just nine months earlier, with that offensive term used to designate a “mixed-race” German with two or three Jewish grandparents.
Sue had two, her father’s parents from proud but assimilated German Jewish families. On her mother’s side, the family came from Lutheran stock, and the newborn Susanne Feidt was baptized at birth. To the Nazis, the only thing that mattered were the child’s grandparents; her status was equivalent to a fully Jewish child.
