The Ruby family lived in Washington Heights in 1925
The second tidbit that turned up in the recent Stanley Ruby searches was a new family address recorded in the 1925 New York state census.
We have long known of the 1930 U.S. census with a family address at 685 West End Avenue (corner of 93rd St.), which is where they lived before moving to Long Beach a year or two after that. I had assumed the West End apartment was where they lived when Stan was born and throughout the 1920s.
Now we see this was wrong. The lived farther uptown, in a Jewish area of Washington Heights, in 1925. The household included Walter Ruby, 31, a salesman; his wife Selma, 26, housewife; children Joan, 6, and Stanley L., 1; and Florence White, a live-in maid.
The apartment building was one of the "new law tenement" structures that filled the blocks above 160th Street, especially in the strip between Broadway and the river. 671 W. 162nd Street is the second building from the corner of Riverside Drive.
Presumably, Riverside Park is where infant Stan must have been taken for carriage strolls.
There is nothing especially surprising to learn that the Ruby family resided in Washington Heights before later moving to the Upper West Side. But it is something we didn't know before.
